Dating timber

No accounts survived from the 1930s work so in order to further understand the significance of the house JMA undertook a visual assessment using an article on conversion of structural timbers by Joe Thompson.

The visual assessment of the timber frame proved invaluable in understanding the development of the house. Pit saw marks were evident on most of the timber frame and the roof trusses, confirming the earliest elements of building fabric. Circular saw marks discovered on fireplace beams and main structural elements such as beams in ground and first floor rooms. Bandsaw marks were discovered on modern repairs such as lippings to the window and dating to the work carried out in the 1930s.
